The Small Business Checkup
Four Steps to Improving Your Business Performance

WHAT IS THE LMDCBC?

The Leadership and Management Development Council of British Columbia (LMDCBC) is the driving force behind the development of the Small Business Check-up. The LMDCBC acts as a catalyst for the enhancement of leadership and management capabilities among small and medium-sized businesses in British Columbia. The LMDCBC views the Small Business Check-up as a critical initiative for BC because the tool will increase awareness of both the opportunities for improvement and the many resources that are available to help businesses improve.

Established in the spring of 1995, the Council is a non-profit society governed by a volunteer board of directors and supported by a group of corporate sponsors. It was established in response to:
Recommendations contained in the report, Moving Forward: The Vision of B.C. Business, produced by the BC Chamber of Commerce in May 1994. The Moving Forward project took a positive and proactive approach to dealing with a changing world economy. The project enlisted the participation of seventy-one small business, industry, sectoral and professional organizations representing some 70,000 businesses to articulate the needs of B.C. business and to develop a strategy that would help them not simply to survive, but to thrive.

The BC business community’s perception that there was a void in the area of effective collective learning and sharing. The BC business community recognizes that it is their ability to lead and manage their businesses that represents the strength both of the BC economy and of their respective enterprises. There is also an overwhelming agreement that to become more competitive, BC businesses must improve their management skills, improve their ability to change quickly and acquire the ability to learn faster.
